About Us

Dean purchased his first English Springer Spaniel in 1980 after a number of years spent with Labradors. He began breeding under the Raintree prefix in 1988. Cathy owned her first pet Springer in 1979, but became serious about the dogs in 1989 when Regent was founded.   Cathy acquired her first field-bred Springer in 1995, and became thoroughly hooked on this aspect of the breed.  She is no longer active in the show ESS world.sass

Raintree is dedicated to the sporting spaniel, with a desire to maintain the character of the breed true to its origins.  We devote as much time to our dogs as we possibly can, given the constraints of earning the dogs a living!

We’ve recently begun dabbling in English Setters.  Raintree Ballerina (Rina) joined the crew in December, 2009 and we kept several puppies from a litter we whelped in March, 2011.  The Setters are an interesting contrast to the Spaniels, and we’re enjoying learning a little about pointing dogs.

We breed a litter when we feel a certain match will produce a dog that we want to keep ourselves in furtherance of our breeding program; consequently we typically breed only one or two litters each year. Our primary goal for every puppy in every litter is that s/he will be a fine spaniel. Competition successes are wonderful, and we enjoy competing and watching our friends compete with our dogs, but we are likewise proud of the Raintree dogs that their owners prize as hunting buddies and/or as companions who amuse and comfort.

We hope you’ll enjoy browsing our site and meeting some of our dogs.

Contact us by e-mail at kennel [AT] raintreess.com.

We feed and recommend Pro Plan products.

Hi, I’m looking to buy a dog for my boyfriend, but he doesn’t want a puppy. Do you know where to look for older dogs to purchase?
Thanks, Mary

Mary, I am not connected with the site except Cathy is a friend. I am sure she would not mind me suggesting you consider a rescue dog. Often these dogs are available for reasons having nothing to do with the dog (ie, death, divorce, financial difficulties, etc.) You might start by reading Cathy’s article “The Right Springer” at http://www.essfta.org/essfta/deciding_to_get_a_dog.htm I also have a couple of articles for people considering getting a dog at http://doginfomat.com/b4ugetadog.htm and http://doginfomat.com/breedsintro.htm#intro. Then visit the ESSFTA’s rescue page at http://www.essfta.org/essfta/rescue.htm

Hope you find this helpful.

our family is looking for a English springer spaniel, preferably a female runt. What is the average cost for one of your pups? We are willing to wait until the time is right, how often do you breed your dogs?

Hi Jeanine. We only breed a litter when we plan to keep something for ourselves, and with this recent group we have plenty of training projects to keep us busy for awhile!

Puppy cost varies depending on the parents involved.

While size amongst a litter does vary, true runts don’t often occur.

Thanks for stopping by our site!

Cathy -
I am looking for a female pup. I currently have a female SS liver/White and am very pleased. She is 12 and developed cancer in her back leg.
We are devistated.
The dog we have now was the least dominant of the litter, hunts very hard, is very smart and an exellent house dog. I have too many questions/comments to list. If possible, I would like you to email me when you have time. We are looking for a new dog similar to our current. I would also like your opinion on introducing a pup into our family. Thanks for your help.

Corie: we haven’t made any plans for a litter this year. We’ll be busy with the puppies we kept from last summer’s litter for awhile. I’ll be sure to post an announcement when we make any decisions. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!
